ITS students are ready to return their action in international arena. SAPUANGIN team from the Mechanical Engineering Department of ITS are preparing to compete in Shell Eco Marathon Asia 2011. They also hope to become one of the best in the competition. How do their preparation?

ITS Online - Met at Cafe Mesin, Eko Hardianto, SAPUANGIN Team manager and accompanied with Buda Yulia Prastya  and Ahmad Nurdin Arpah. They will travel to Malaysia on July 5 and will compete on July 10 to 14 2011. Eko said that in this race, ITS will send SAPUANGIN 3, 4, and 5. "Initially, we wanted to send four teams, but it is limited for only three teams,'' said Eko. SAPUANGIN Car 3 is a revolution of  SAPUANGIN 2 which previously was competed in the same race in 2010. But there is rearrangement of the design and also improvement on the engine. SAPUANGIN  3 has 100 kg weight without driver with red and white colors on their body.

If SAPUANGIN  2 can travel a distance of 238 km / liter, then SAPUANGIN  3 is expected to travel a distance of 300 km / hour. It is because the change of fuel system from carburator to injection fuel system. ''If the SAPUANGIN  2 had Paijo Experiment (PEX) as an engine, this time we make a device that controls the injection system. His name IQU-TECH. Simply read iki uteke (this is his brain, in javanese, Red),'' said Eko, half laughing.

SAPUANGIN  4 construction is almost similar to SAPUANGIN  3. Weight net is also 100 kg. ''Just a different colors and its nose," said the student of class 2007. This car is the only car from Indonesia that use diesel engine. Other participants from University of Indonesia (UI), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Gajah Mada (UGM), and State Polytechnic Pontianak, are using the gasoline engine. Eko said that with using diesel engines, it is expected to produce the bigger power.

Then the last car is SAPUANGIN  5. Different with the previous two cars that fall into category of Urban Concept (City Car), SAPUANGIN  5 included in prototype category. The shape is smaller than the other and futuristic. ''Things that become our pride in this car is PEX 02 and IQU-TECH,'' said Eko whom also joined Shell Eco Marathon last year.

In the previous race, the team only used SAPUANGIN  PEX 01 with one sparking plug. While in the latest machinery, Paijo Experiment (PEX) has been developed into a PEX 2 which has two spark plugs in one cylinder. In Addition, the weight of the SAPUANGIN  5 are the lightest car compared with other SAPUANGIN cars. It is only 45 kg weight, without driver. With its light weight, SAPUANGIN 5 is optimistic that can travel a distance of 1500 km / liter.

Overall, Eko, Buda, and Nurdin said That SAPUANGIN  3 and 4 preparations  has reached 90%. As for SAPUANGIN  5 to 80%. But that does not mean SAPUANGIN 5 lost start in preparation. ''Because of its simple and light, my teams want to add more innovation. Moreover, the assembly of SAPUANGIN 5 are easier than the other two cars,'' explained Nurdin.

SAPUANGIN  team also expects a support from academicians of ITS through social networking media. In this year, Shell as a organizer provides an opportunity for supporters to support through Facebook. ''In this race there is an award given because of the large voting,'' said Buda. Last year, the team who won this category was ITB.

Buda hope that  ITS can win the title in this category. It's easy, visit http://www.shell.com/home/content/ecomarathon/asia/for_participants/meet_the_teams/. Then select the preferred car of SAPUANGIN, and then it will forwarded to facebook. ''Because we have three teams, we hope the incoming vote can be centralized,'' said Buda. (Nir / Jude)
